A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF OUR WORK IN AFGHANISTAN
PTCRO launched Food Bank Project in Afghanistan through self-contributed funds of its staff, founders and board to support economically weak segments of the society that have been hit by the economic crisis caused by COVID-19. The beneficiaries of this project included t children working and begging on the streets, drug addicts, widows, families of disabled and unemployed people. Food was provided to the families of these children with the proviso that they should take these children off the streets and send them to school, drug addicts stop using drugs and be available for work.
PTCRO implemented the ADALAT Legal Advocacy Grants in 2019 and 2018. This project mainly focused on increasing citizens’ demand for quality legal services, strengthen rule of law and promote access to justice and empower the citizens to obtain justice in Badakhshan and Takhar provinces. In terms of the women/human rights violation cases, this project was very significant for the eradication of human rights abuses, increasing targeted beneficiaries’ awareness and contributing to establishing the rule of law in the country.
Throughout the project, PTCRO implemented all activities as per the approved plan successfully with close coordination of ADALAT/CHEECHI and other governmental and non-governmental stakeholders in the targeted districts of Takhar and Badakhshan provinces. Key activities included establishment of provincial advocacy forums, advocacy networking meetings. three-day advocacy Training-of-Trainers (ToT), basic advocacy training, legal issues training, focus group discussions, radio round tables, and production and broadcasting of legal messages
PTCRO implemented Funding Leadership Opportunities for women to conduct legal advocacy for women’s rights in Islam and the Constitution of Afghanistan for 2,500 families in three districts of Kabul namely Kalakan, Istaleg and Bagrami. Through the project, PTCRO provided advocacy for women’s rights and conducted weekly focus group discussions with the Community Development Councils, Shuras and religious leaders and elders in these three districts.
PTCRO implemented the Project of “Training of Justice and Law to EVAW (Elimination of Violence Against Women) Commission Members” in ten (10) provinces i.e. Kabul, Bamyan, Balkh, Parwan, Herat, Badakhshan and Nangarhar, Sar-e-Pul, Laghman, and Kapisa for 20 participants in each province with a total of 200 target beneficiaries by the support of “UN-WOMEN” from Dec 2012 to Feb 2013. The purpose of the training was to increase the awareness of EVAW Commission members of the Ministry of Women Affairs on women’s rights and issues and enabling them to run effective programs for combating violence against women. The legal training was aimed at improving the capacity of the provincial Departments of Women Affairs in fighting violence against women.
PTCRO implemented a project of “Establishing & Running a Day Care Centre for the children of Women Carpet Weavers” in Mazar-e-Sharif by the support of “Good Weave” from June 2012- June 2015. The day care centre served as a safe and secure place for the children of women working in the carpet weaving industry in Sharak-e-Qalenbafan in Mazar-e-Sharif. The children were given basic education facilities in this centre together with mid-day meals. The children spent their time in learning and other gainful activities and the parents were assured of their children’s safety while they are away from home. Forty families benefitted through this project.
PTCRO distributed humanitarian aid items through “Relief Program” for the needy and starving Afghan families in Afghanistan and Pakistan by the support of Isabella’s Little Miracles, Inc, USA in 2013. PTCRO implemented this relief program for impoverished people with the support of Isabella’s Little Miracles Inc. and distributed clothes and other essential needs among the needy and poor families of three provinces. PTCRO coordinated the entire relief program from the shipment and receipt of donations to their distribution. It was a great help for the poor families especially in the winter season as they are not able to afford warm clothes for themselves
PTCRO conducted vocational training in Animal Husbandry Training to Women for 40 families in Kapisa province by the support of Creative/USAID from Dec, 2010 to June, 2011. These families were living in highly impoverished conditions and were earning from the source of animal husbandry in Kapisa province. Through this project PTCRO also provided free livestock to the beneficiaries enabling them to continue their work in that area after the completion of the project. In this project, PTCRO trained women about producing dairy products in a hygienic way which is not only essential for their personal health but will also increase the quality of their products. The economic condition of the beneficiaries improved greatly as a result of this project.
PTCRO conducted an opinion survey about the NATO in Parwan Province of Afghanistan and interviewed over 300 local men, women for the survey. Additionally, PTCRO also conducted FGDs and Key Informant Interviews with CDC members, community elders and government officials. The survey was commissioned by the Afghan Women’s Network.
PTCRO implemented a project on “Labour Rights Awareness for Women” for 40 beneficiaries, in partnership with Rights to Democracy in Jalalabad province of Afghanistan.
PTCRO implemented a project of “Women Carpentry Training” for 40 women in Kabul with the support of IOM in 2005. The project enabled women to learn an important vocational skill and improved the economic condition of the beneficiaries. Through this program PTCRO provided carpentry training through expert carpentry master trainers in Kabul. Through the development of this vocational skill the women were able to set up their own small scale carpentry/ furniture businesses and earn a sustainable income for supporting themselves and their families.
PTCRO implemented a project of “Gender Training” in 5 provinces: Herat, Mazar-e-Sharif, Kandahr, Kabul and Jalalabad for 180 direct beneficiaries by the support of “IOM” in 2004. Through this training the aim of PTCRO was to state the need of gender mainstreaming in different organizations active in these five provinces. This training program enabled the beneficiaries to understand, develop and mainstream the gender issues for the success and development of their organizations.
PTCRO implemented a project of “Women Gabion Weaving” for 65 families in Ghazni and Kabul provinces by the support of “Action Faim” in 2004. Through this project PTCRO provided vocational training in gabion weaving to 65 women and enabled the beneficiaries to learn a valuable income generation skill for sustaining their livelihood in the future.
PTCRO implemented a project of “Women Gabion Weaving” for 40 families of Takhar province by the support of “UNOPS” in 2004. Through this project PTCRO trained 40 women in Gabion Weaving and had developed a vocational skill in these women enabling them to create a sustainable livelihood and source of income for themselves. It enabled them to become financially independent and provide financial support to their families as well. It therefore contributed to the improvement of the standard of living of these families and provided a source of income for them. These projects also gave birth to small business entrepreneurs of gabion which ultimately improved their personal lives and community.
PTCRO conducted vocation training in photography and business awareness funded by UNFPA in 4 providences of Afghanistan of such as Mazar-e-Sharif , Badakhshan, Logar and Bamyan started. This training was in different areas of photography and included entrepreneurship and business courses. The photography course was conducted by a German photographerand PTCRO’s business trainers provided entrepreneurship training. The project enabled 40 women to learn a vocational skill for income generation.
